Jean Shopping? Look at the Pockets!

What do you think when you hear 'Jean Shopping'? Am I the only one who puts jean shopping up there with the dread of bathing suit or bra shopping? Not exactly the funnest thing to do.

While there are a number of things to pay attention to when it comes to jeans, in this article I am focusing on pocket placement.

Pockets can have an incredible effect on how our bums look and, more importantly, how we feel in the jeans.

Finding the right denim is hard work and requires patience. Here are some tips to help you find the best fit when it comes to pockets.

  • Pocket size – too small makes your bum look bigger than necessary

  • Horizontal Placement – The further out they are the wider your bum looks and the further in the smaller it looks (to an extent)

  • Vertical Placement – If they sit too high they look like what the 80’s called ‘mom jeans’ and they are not very flattering. If they sit too low it squishes your bum and can make it look saggy

These pictures are all taken of the same person (me) on the same day. You can see how different pockets make the bum look different.

Pockets are sitting too wide making my hips look wider than they are.

Pockets are a little too big (long), wide and low making my bum sag and hips look wide. I also have a long torso, so my overall balance also feels off.

Pockets are sitting too low. You don't want them hitting the first crease. This also emphasizes my long torso, causing me to feel off balance.

Pockets are just right. The camera angle is slightly off, but you can see that they aren't too wide or too low. This gives me the balance I'm looking for.

Make sure to take the time to find ones that make you feel great and use this guide as a way to assess why the do or don't feel great. As a personal stylist I will tell you this will make a big impact. Take pictures of your back side if needed to help you out (it's super awkward, but very helpful).
